Their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, orchestrated through the Tata Steel Foundation (TSF), create lasting social capital and impact.

Introduction

Behind the towering facades of steel skyscrapers and the formidable force of industry, lies the profound dedication of Tata Steel to enrich the society that surrounds it. From its inception, Tata Steel’s vision to be the global steel industry benchmark for value creation and corporate citizenship has pivoted on its commitment to work with tribal and excluded communities. Their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, orchestrated through the Tata Steel Foundation (TSF), create lasting social capital and impact.

The Genesis and Purpose

The Tata Steel Foundation, established on August 16, 2016 under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013, stands as a testament to the industry giant’s commitment to societal upliftment. This wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Steel Limited, eligible for the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) and CSR implementation, serves as the fulcrum of Tata Steel’s CSR activities in India.

TSF’s mission is to foster an enlightened, equitable society where every individual realises their potential with dignity. By co-creating transformative, efficient, and lasting solutions to the developmental challenges faced by tribal and excluded communities, TSF stays true to its purpose.

The Manpower Behind the Mission

The bedrock of TSF’s mission is a force of over 1,000 dedicated professionals. These individuals regularly interact with community members, stakeholders, and groups within the communities, ensuring that grievances are heard and resolved. The dialogue they foster is instrumental in driving change and maintaining harmony in the areas where Tata Steel operates.

Works and Programmes Undertaken

In FY2022-23, TSF’s diverse programs directly impacted the lives of over 3.15 million people from vulnerable sections of society. This included a post-COVID scenario of extending medical amenities to communities in need.

The Foundation’s works span across a broad spectrum of development areas, such as health, education, livelihoods, drinking water, infrastructure, sports, household nutrition, rights for Persons with Disabilities, grassroots governance, child labour elimination, and women empowerment.

The Foundation is also conscientiously attuned to the specific nuances of tribal communities, and develops programs that cater to their unique needs through platforms such as Tribal Leadership Programme, tribal languages, Samvaad Fellowship and Tribal Cuisine.

Operating Within a Considerable Budget

During the fiscal year, Tata Steel Foundation spent INR 511 crore on CSR activities, a 17% increase against the commitment of FY2021-22. This expenditure, with INR 480.62 crore funded by Tata Steel, exceeded the regulatory mandate of 2% of the average net profit of the preceding three financial years, emphasizing the firm’s dedication to societal betterment.

Impact Across Vast Geographical Areas

TSF operates across a vast geographic area, covering over 4,500 villages in the states of Jharkhand and Odisha. It also extends its reach to Tata Steel’s operational locations in Uttar Pradesh (Sahibabad), Maharashtra (Khopoli), and the recent inclusion of Punjab (Ludhiana).

Creating Lasting Community Impact

With its myriad initiatives and programmes, the Tata Steel Foundation has created an extensive community impact. By reaching over 3.15 million lives, the Foundation has ensured significant and lasting improvement in the well-being of communities proximate to Tata Steel’s operating locations.

Whether it is addressing core development gaps, such as maternal and child mortalities or access to school and learning enrichment, or co-creating change models with tribal and excluded communities, TSF has proved to be a game-changer in the CSR arena. Their commitment towards creating an equitable society has created ripples of change, transforming lives, and making a significant societal impact.

The Tata Steel Foundation, with its core commitment to demonstrate leadership in addressing societal challenges, is not just an agent of change but a beacon of hope for millions, fostering progress, nurturing dreams and creating a more inclusive society. Through its extensive efforts, the Foundation stands as an embodiment of Tata Steel’s resolve to make a difference in the world.
